LABA / Skvot: Advanced course on Publication Editing with InDesign
About the course
The course aimed to deepen knowledge in typography, layout practices, and printing technologies while showcasing contemporary examples to highlight current trends. Spanning two months with ten sessions, the training included multiple homework assignments for practice and culminated in a final project: creating a magazine or a fanzine.
The assignment
I chose to have a break from my usual work, so I decided to honor my passion for cars by creating a fanzine that breaks with tradition. My goal was to bring a lighthearted tone, use plenty of images, and make it feel like a YouTube video on paper.
The first step was to brainstorm a name that would resonate with my target audience of petrolheads aged 20-40, both men and women, while reflecting the style of my vision for the publication. I came up with the name “Carfluence” for my magazine and tested multiple fonts that are both elegant and dynamic. I settled for the logotype on Bely Display, refined its kerning, and chose Quatro Slab for the titles and body text.
Next, I created a front and back cover pair that could be serialized for future editions of the magazine. To demonstrate this, I designed three different covers.
The course required me to include multiple articles, an interview in two languages, an opinion piece, section dividers, a table of contents, and other standard magazine elements. Some of the content was sourced from the web, while other parts were written by me or generated by ChatGPT.
I hope you enjoy it!
